Gopal Mandir stands in the middle of the main market square, which makes it one of the easiest temples to fit into a walking route through the old city. It was built by Bayajibai Shinde and is dedicated to Krishna.

The name means twenty-four pillars, and that is exactly what you find: an ornate gateway whose architecture dates to around the ninth or tenth century, with idols of guardian deities set into it. It is a remnant of the old walled city and easy to miss if you are not looking for it.

Set on the Triveni Ghat of the Shipra, a little away from the old town, this temple is dedicated to the nine planets. It draws steady footfall from people performing planetary remedies, and pairs naturally with a Navgrah Shanti pooja.

Kaliyadeh Palace sits on the bank of the Shipra with a Sun Temple in its grounds. It is a historic rather than strictly religious stop, and a quieter one — useful if you want a break from the busier shrines.

Two shrines in one complex: Rama, Lakshmana and Sita in the Rama temple, and Janardana-Vishnu next door. The idols date to the seventeenth century.

Ujjain's ISKCON temple is a modern Krishna temple and one of the calmer, more spacious places to sit for a while. Worth knowing about if you are travelling with family who find the older temple crowds hard going.

Ujjain held a serious place in Indian astronomy — the Surya Siddhanta and other major works are tied to the city, and it was long treated as the reference meridian for Hindu astronomy. The observatory still stands and is a genuinely interesting stop for anyone curious about that history.
