How to Reach Ujjain – Flights, Trains & Road Routes

Getting to Ujjain by air, rail and road: Indore airport is 53 km away, the station code is UJN, and Bhopal, Ahmedabad and Delhi road distances with the highways that serve them.

Ujjain sits in western Madhya Pradesh and is easier to reach than most people expect — there is no airport in the city itself, but Indore is under an hour away by road and the railway station is on a busy Western Railway route. Here is how each option actually works, and which one to pick depending on where you are starting from.

Flying in: Indore is your airport

The nearest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore, roughly 53 km from Ujjain. It receives regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Bhopal, which covers most of the country with one connection. From the terminal you can take a taxi straight to Ujjain, and the drive is comfortable enough to do after a morning flight and still make an evening darshan.

By train: look for station code UJN

Ujjain Junction lies on the Western Railway zone and its station code is UJN. It is well served by long-distance trains from major cities, and for many pilgrims an overnight train is the most practical choice — you arrive early, drop your bags, and are at the temple before the queues build. Book ahead during Shravan and around festivals, when trains on this route fill quickly.

By road: distances from major cities

Ujjain is connected by good motorable roads in every direction. Approximate distances:

  • Indore — 53 km
  • Bhopal — 183 km
  • Ahmedabad — 402 km
  • Gwalior — 451 km
  • Khajuraho — 570 km
  • Mumbai — 655 km
  • Delhi — 774 km

The city is served by National Highway 3 (the Agra–Mumbai route), National Highway 59 (Ahmedabad–Godhra–Ujjain) and National Highway 59A (Ujjain–Betul–Nagpur, connecting NH69). State Highway 27 runs Jhalawad–Ujjain–Burhanpur and State Highway 31 links Neemach, Ratlam and Dhar.

Buses

Regular bus services run between Ujjain and Indore, Bhopal, Ratlam, Gwalior, Mandu, Dhar, Kota and Omkareshwar, among others. Buses are the cheapest way in and useful if you are combining Ujjain with Omkareshwar or Mandu on the same trip.

Getting around the city

Ujjain runs an AC city bus service, and autos are easy to find around the temple area. That said, the main temples are spread across the city rather than clustered together, so if you are trying to cover several in a day, a car with a driver saves a lot of waiting in the heat.

Which option suits you

Coming from a metro with limited time, fly to Indore and drive across. Travelling from anywhere in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan or Gujarat, the train to UJN is usually simplest. Driving yourself makes most sense if you plan to add Omkareshwar or Mandu, since those are awkward to reach by public transport.
