Places to Visit Near Ujjain – Day Trips & Extensions

Where to go from Ujjain: Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, the Mandu hill fort, Indore 53 km away and Bhopal at 183 km, plus which are realistic as day trips.

Most pilgrims come to Ujjain for Mahakaleshwar and leave the next morning — which is a shame, because the city sits within reach of a second Jyotirlinga, a spectacular hill fort and two of the biggest cities in Madhya Pradesh. If you can spare an extra day or two, here is what is worth adding.

Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar is the other Jyotirlinga in Madhya Pradesh, set on an island in the Narmada shaped like the Om symbol. Buses run directly between Ujjain and Omkareshwar, and it is the most natural extension for anyone doing a Jyotirlinga circuit. Pairing the two in one trip is common enough that we build packages around it.

Mandu

Mandu, also written Mandav, is a ruined hill fort city of palaces, pavilions and stepwells spread across a plateau. It is a complete change of pace from temple queues — quiet, green in the monsoon, and best explored slowly. Buses connect Ujjain with Mandu and Dhar, though a car gives you far more freedom once you are up on the plateau.

Indore

At just 53 km, Indore is the closest major city and the location of your nearest airport. It is worth a stop in its own right for the Rajwada palace, the Lal Bagh mansion and a food scene that people travel specifically for. Many visitors fly into Indore, spend an evening there, then head to Ujjain the next morning.

Bhopal

Bhopal is 183 km away and makes sense as part of a wider Madhya Pradesh route rather than a day trip. It puts the lakes, museums and the Sanchi stupa complex within reach if you are travelling on rather than returning home.

Further afield

Ujjain has direct bus links to Ratlam, Dhar, Kota and Gwalior, so it slots neatly into longer routes through Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Gwalior is 451 km and Khajuraho 570 km — both firmly multi-day propositions, not day trips.

What is realistic in a day

Indore is comfortably a day trip. Omkareshwar and Mandu are both doable in a long day if you start early with your own vehicle, but you will enjoy either far more with an overnight stay. Bhopal, Gwalior and Khajuraho need dedicated time.
